Cindy Sherman (1954-) (Images) (Biography)

A few brief remarks on the body of work.

Cindy Sherman's photographs are often (if not always) self-portraits. Her Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) established the artist as a paramount postmodern deconstructer of the identity, of the female stereotype, and of photographs. Her work constitutes an admirable tenacity, and sense for the depth and importance of her subject matter. The body of work of the artist is a beautiful and intelligent commentary on the portraying of women in popular culture. An aspect of her work that is rarely mentioned is the slight off-set one experiences when confronted with a non-top-model in what are sensed to be famous images, or cliches.

(Cindy Sherman had work in the Jeu de Paume, Concorde in Paris in 2006.)
